Lemosho Route 7 Days – The Ultimate Scenic

The Lemosho Route 7 Days trek is widely regarded as one of the best and most beautiful ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. This route offers unmatched scenery, excellent acclimatization, lower traffic in the early days, and one of the highest summit success rates of all Kilimanjaro routes.

Starting from the remote western side of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Lemosho Route allows trekkers to experience the mountain gradually and naturally. Over seven carefully designed days, climbers pass through rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and glacial zones, before reaching the iconic Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters) — the highest point in Africa.

The Lemosho Route is ideal for first-time climbers, photographers, and travelers seeking both comfort and adventure, offering a perfect balance between challenge, safety, and breathtaking landscapes.

Day 1: Londorossi Gate – Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp

Elevation: 2,100m → 2,650m
Trekking Time: 3–4 hours
Distance: ~6 km

Your Lemosho Route 7 Days adventure begins with a morning pickup from Moshi or Arusha. You will drive to Londorossi Gate on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro for registration and permits.

After a short transfer to the trailhead, the trek begins through lush montane rainforest. The forest is rich in biodiversity, and you may spot blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, birds, and unique plant species.

The trail is gentle, making this a perfect first day to ease into trekking while enjoying the peaceful environment.

Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp
Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp – Shira 1 Camp

Elevation: 2,650m → 3,610m
Trekking Time: 6–8 hours
Distance: ~16 km

Today’s trek climbs steadily as you leave the rainforest and enter heath and moorland zones. Vegetation changes dramatically, with giant heathers and open landscapes replacing dense forest.

As you ascend, enjoy breathtaking views of the Shira Plateau and distant peaks of Kilimanjaro. This long but manageable day helps your body begin the acclimatization process naturally.

Arrive at Shira 1 Camp, located on the western edge of the plateau, with sweeping views of the surrounding highlands.

Overnight: Shira 1 Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp – Shira 2 Camp

Elevation: 3,610m → 3,850m
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Distance: ~7 km

This is a shorter and more relaxed trekking day, allowing for further acclimatization. You will cross the Shira Plateau, one of the most scenic areas on Mount Kilimanjaro.

The terrain is relatively flat, offering panoramic views of Kibo Peak, ancient lava flows, and expansive alpine landscapes. This day is excellent for photography and gentle altitude adaptation.

By afternoon, you arrive at Shira 2 Camp, where you can rest, hydrate, and enjoy the mountain environment.

Overnight: Shira 2 Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

Elevation: 3,850m → 4,630m → 3,960m
Trekking Time: 6–8 hours
Distance: ~10 km

This is one of the most important days for acclimatization. You will hike uphill toward Lava Tower, reaching over 4,600 meters. Lunch is taken at high altitude before descending to Barranco Camp.

This “climb high, sleep low” approach is critical for helping your body adapt to reduced oxygen levels.

The landscape becomes increasingly dramatic, shifting from moorland to alpine desert. Descending into the Barranco Valley, you are rewarded with stunning views of the Barranco Wall and surrounding glaciers.

Overnight: Barranco Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 5: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp

Elevation: 3,960m → 4,035m
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Distance: ~5 km

The day begins with the exciting climb of the Barranco Wall, a non-technical scramble that is one of the highlights of the entire trek. With guidance from your experienced guide, the climb is safe and enjoyable.

From the top, enjoy spectacular views across the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro. The trail then continues across ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp.

This shorter day allows time for rest, hydration, and preparation for higher altitudes.

Overnight: Karanga Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 6: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp

Elevation: 4,035m → 4,673m
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Distance: ~4 km

Today you trek steadily toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit attempt. The environment is now a true alpine desert, with sparse vegetation and expansive views.

Arrive at Barafu Camp early to rest, hydrate, and prepare for the summit night. Your guide will provide a detailed briefing on what to expect during the ascent to Uhuru Peak.

Early dinner and rest are essential for the long night ahead.

Overnight: Barafu Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 7: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Gate

Elevation: 4,673m → 5,895m → 1,640m
Trekking Time: 12–15 hours

Summit day begins around midnight. Trek slowly under the stars toward Stella Point, then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

Reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable moment, offering breathtaking views above the clouds. After photos and celebration, descend carefully back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Gate.

At the gate, you receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate before transferring back to Moshi or Arusha.
