Day 1: Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Altitude: 2,100m – 2,650m
Habitat: Rainforest
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
After breakfast, you drive from Moshi/Arusha to the Lemosho Gate for registration. The trek begins through dense rainforest filled with towering trees, monkeys, and birds. This quiet section of the mountain feels untouched and peaceful.
You arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp), where you enjoy your first night on the mountain under the forest canopy.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
Altitude: 2,650m – 3,610m
Habitat: Moorland
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
The trail gradually climbs out of the rainforest into open moorland. Vegetation changes dramatically as giant heathers and volcanic rock landscapes appear.
You cross streams and ridges before reaching the Shira Plateau, one of the largest high-altitude plateaus in the world. Overnight at Shira 1 Camp, with stunning views of Kibo Peak.
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Altitude: 3,610m – 3,850m
Habitat: Moorland / Alpine
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
A shorter and more relaxed trekking day allows your body to continue acclimatizing. The trail crosses the Shira Plateau with panoramic views of Mount Meru and Kibo.
This day is important for altitude adaptation. You overnight at Shira 2 Camp, often visited by high-altitude ravens and surrounded by vast open skies.
Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp (via Lava Tower)
Altitude: 3,850m – 4,630m – 3,950m
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
A critical acclimatization day. You climb gradually to Lava Tower (4,630m), where lunch is served. Afterward, you descend to Barranco Camp, allowing your body to adapt using the “climb high, sleep low” principle.
Barranco Camp is one of the most scenic camps on Kilimanjaro, located beneath the imposing Barranco Wall and glaciers.
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Altitude: 3,950m – 4,035m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
You begin the day by ascending the famous Barranco Wall. Though it looks intimidating, it is a fun and non-technical scramble offering spectacular views.
After the wall, the trail undulates through valleys and ridges before reaching Karanga Camp, an important acclimatization stop before summit night.
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Altitude: 4,035m – 4,673m
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
A shorter trekking day designed to conserve energy for the summit attempt. The landscape becomes barren and dramatic, with cold winds and volcanic rock.
You reach Barafu Camp, the final base camp. After an early dinner and briefing, you rest in preparation for the midnight summit push.
Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Altitude: 4,673m – 5,895m – 3,100m
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
Summit day begins around midnight. You climb slowly under the stars toward Stella Point, then continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
Reaching the summit at sunrise is a once-in-a-lifetime achievement. After photos and celebration, you descend carefully to Mweka Camp for overnight rest.
Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Altitude: 3,100m – 1,640m
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
A gentle descent through lush rainforest leads you to Mweka Gate, where you receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificates.
Transfer back to Moshi/Arusha for a well-earned rest.
